Description
Leo Sayer’s Living in a Fantasy is a 1980 album that was produced by Alan Tarney. It was the last album to yield hits for Sayer in America, closing out the terrific ’70s run as the ’80s began.
The album features a slick and sparse production, with the large mix of musicians who helped craft albums like Thunder In My Heart, Endless Flight, Here, World Radio, and others vanishing as the singer goes back to the pared-down format of his Just a Boy period. The big difference is that Sayer had gone beyond the singer/songwriter personality of those early recordings to having marquee value, as well as his own TV show.
The album opens with the title track, a catchy pop song with a message about the dangers of living in a fantasy world. The second single, “One Man Band”, is a more reflective ballad about the loneliness of fame. “When the Money Runs Out” is a rocker about the perils of financial insecurity, while “Takin’ the Easy Way Out” is a Billy Joel-esque ballad about the temptation of giving up on your dreams.
Other highlights include “Work”, a funky soul track about the importance of hard work, and “An English Man in New York”, a humorous song about Sayer’s experiences in the Big Apple.
Living in a Fantasy is a solid album that showcases Sayer’s talents as a singer, songwriter, and performer. It’s not his best album, but it’s still a worthwhile listen for fans of ’70s pop music.
