Description
The 5th Dimension album called Portrait was released in 1970. It was their first album for Bell Records, having switched from the Soul City Records label. The cover features an impressionistic portrait by famous artist LeRoy Neiman.
The album was a commercial success, reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 1 on the R&B chart. It was certified gold by the RIAA.
The album spawned four Top 40 singles: “Stoned Soul Picnic”, “Wedding Bell Blues”, “Up, Up and Away”, and “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In”. “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Up, Up and Away” both reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The album was produced by Bones Howe, who also produced the group’s previous albums. The arrangements were by Bill Holman, Bob Alcivar, and Bones Howe.
The album was a critical success as well, with many critics praising the group’s vocals and the lush arrangements. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
The 5th Dimension continued to have success in the 1970s, releasing several more albums that went gold or platinum. However, they never again achieved the commercial and critical success of Portrait.
The members of the 5th Dimension have all gone on to solo careers. Florence LaRue and Marilyn McCoo have both had successful solo careers in music and television. Billy Davis Jr. has had a successful career as a producer and actor. Lamonte McLemore has worked as a music producer and arranger. Ron Townson died in 2001.
The 5th Dimension continues to tour and perform, with different lineups of the original members. They are considered one of the most successful vocal groups of all time.
